Corwin submitted the following essay to the Scholarship Committee in which he briefly discussed his social, academic and career interests.

Life! Persons living today have different views of the lives they lead. Some live for the moment, while other may live just for all the benefits that life affords. Across this spectrum the dynamics in their reasoning can be puzzling. Regardless of these changing views I am of the opinion that life is a gift. This belief is heavily hinged on the fact that I aspire to the very pinnacle of my faith.

I am a 20 year old male, a proud Afro-Guyanese. I am the seventh of nine children and came from a family that is not that uncommon in that I have three parents. I currently live with my father and mother, not my biological mother but my mother in every sense of the word. She has been this constant in my life ever since I was a tender age of three months, while my biological mother rendered support as needed. I strongly believe that we should worship the creator in the days of our youth, a very important twine that composes the fabric of my faith. It has been just over a year since I became an official Seventh-day Adventist member. I took the decision made very seriously. It was never a decision I thought I would have made but I was impressed by the Holy Spirit and sealed my decision and now I live each day reaffirming the choice made. I would have been educated from nursery all through secondary. My secondary education started and ended during the period of 2001-2008. I wrote eight subjects and successfully passed all. While I was awaiting my results I had the opportunity to participate in a work-study programme at the Rite Care Pharmacy within my community for a duration of one month and subsequently ventured into other odd jobs, as a staff within the Accounts Department of a bakery, the Regional Democratic Council within my community. I did not see the need to just stand idly by and do nothing as it is obvious that I was uncertain of what I wanted to do. Over the course of the two year period I also had the opportunity to think about what I wanted.

Confidence in my decision came from the influences of my neighbor. I see her as an individual who is driven and she would always encourage me to put my best foot forward. I believe that one should work hard to achieve set goals and keep doubt out of the equation; there will be disappointments but those we can learn from. I want to be the best I can be and more than that economics had sparked my interest. I want to make myself marketable within the working environment and my choice also meshed with the job opportunities available within my country. With the knowledge gained from these studies I know I will be able to make an impact in my society while helping to shape the economic systems within my country. The following goals brought me to a number of decisions and after much deliberation it was apparent that I wanted to pursue a career in economics

My future in the field of economics will ultimately lead me in the direction of becoming a successful businessman. I appreciate the business world and becoming a bank manager or an executive within an organization that seeks to create change is a challenge I am willing to undertake. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to study at the University of Guyana . I will be one who is fortunate to have the opportunity obtain tertiary education. I need financial support for two reasons, firstly, the university to which I have applied is located a long way from my home and traveling to and from classes will be very difficult because of the class schedules which is not that flexible also research and revision would be almost impossible, since I will be tired from the travel. Secondly, my parents are senior citizens and are not in a position to render financial support of this magnitude. My mother is the only parent that is working, thus it would be very difficult to cover my study expenses. The financial assistance given will to a very large extent make my time at the university much easier, it will ease a burden that could not be borne by my parents and will only result in success. I am currently in need of assistance with my rent, text books, stationary, transportation as well as printing handouts. There is nothing that places my needs above any other person. However, I am in need and am driven to be successful. Also noteworthy is the fact that I will ultimately seek to make a contribution to my community while simultaneously making myself marketable.
